Ocean County Social Skills provides social skills to children and adolescents ages 7-17. Children are grouped according to age and skill needs. Parents will be asked to fill out a "skill menu" form to identify their child's specific needs before placement in the group.
All groups will run 1 hour, once a week. At the end of each group, parents are invited to join the group to learn about the skill lesson of the week and discuss ways to reinforce the skill at home.
The groups are open- ended and on-going which allows for new members to joing at any time.
Learning appropriate social skills is an on-going process. It is very successful with daily reinforcement and review and practice of the skills.
Our goal is to empower the children who have mastered a specific skill and for them to help teach those children who are new or have not mastered that specific skill. Children learn from their peer mentors. This would allow for modeling of appropriate skill/behavior from a peer while at the same time improving the self esteem of the peer mentor. Many times children come to group wanting to talk about a social issue that recently happened at home or school (bullying, teasing, argument). We are able to address these issues immediately and process it as a social skill lesson with the entire group. We also allow for generalization of the skills learned in group with community outings (local restaurant, bowling, etc.) where various skills can be practiced outside of the group.
Groups run continuously throughout the year, including the summer.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child!!
